An overview of the Earth

Our earth has only 29.1% land area i.e. 148,647,000 Sq. Km which suitable for living. More than 70% of our land is occupied with water area. The total size of Land’s water area is 361,419,000 Sq. Km which is about 70.9%. More interestingly from such a huge quantity of water only 3% of water is drinkable and clean and rest 97% water is salty and not clean. Other facts and figures regarding earth are listed here:

· The estimated age of the earth is near 4.6 billion years.

· The earth’s total surface area is near to 510,066,000 Sq. Km

· Total ocean area of earth is near to 335,258,000 Sq. Km

· The earth’s Weight (Mass) is approximately near to 5,940,000,000,000,000,000,000 metric tons

· The earth orbits around sun at 66,700 mph, 107,320 km per hour and he earth complete its one round and orbit the Sun every (365.5.45.46) i.e. 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 46 seconds.

The pie chart shows in blue color that our earth have 71% of Water area and soil color representing the land area which is 29% of earth.

According to a rough estimation about 12% of the world population lives in the mountain areas. Interesting point is that all the top 10 mountains are situated in the continent of Asia and except Karakoram all of above mentioned mountains come into the range of great, middle and sub Himalayas. The above listed mountains lies on the land surface above the sea level but some highest mountains of the world also found under the oceans and one of the world largest under ocean mountain is Mauna Kea in the Hawaii and if we compare,  it is greater than the Mount Everest. The Mount Everest is tallest mountain from the above sea level.

Continents by Estimated Population

World population is tremendously growing since 1350. In 1804 the first billion of world population completed after 200,000 years but the growth of population accelerated between 1804 to 2011and as a result 6 billion people increased in only 207 years. So it is easily concluded that the world population is increasing very fast. There are seven continents on the planet of earth that bears a total load of about 6.91 billion people approximately. World population by continents according to Reference Bureau 2010 World Population Data Sheet and the World Fact book summarized here:

  • Asia approx population is 4,157,300,000
  • Africa estimated population 1,030,400,000
  • Europe total population is about 738,600,000
  • North America total estimated population equal to 461,114,000
  • South America approx population is 390,700,000
  • Antarctica is only the continent that population is 0.
  • Australia & Oceania keeps a total population of 36,700,000

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the total population of the World, projected to 07/14/11 at 07:14 UTC (EST+5) is 6,948,852,653. (Source: http://www.census.gov)  For updated estimation please visit: http://www.census.gov/main/www/popclock.html.

  • Asia is the world largest continent that spread on a total area of 44,391,162 sq. km (17,139,445 Sq. miles).
  • Africa is the 2nd largest continent that spread on a total area of 30,244,049 sq. km (11,677,239 Sq. miles).
  • North America  is the 3rd largest continent that spread on a total area of 24,247,039 sq. km (9,361,791 Sq. miles)
  • South America  is the 4th largest continent that spread on a total area of 17,821,029 sq. km (6,880,706 Sq. miles)
  • Antarctica is the 5th largest continent that spread on a total area of 14,245,000 sq. km (5,500,000 Sq. miles)
  • Europe is the 6th continent that spread on a total area of 10,354,636 sq. km (3,997,929 Sq. miles)
  • Australia/Oceania  is the smallest continent that spread on a total area of 7,686,884 sq. Km (2,967,909 Sq. miles)

Total land area of all continents approximately 148,989,799 Sq. Km (92,095,590 Square miles). About 7 billion of human being lives in the world. It is important to note that Antarctica is only continent where is nor life and not country found and the population is zero. Near to some people there are six continent and they use term Eurasia is used to represent Europe and Asia as a one continent in some parts of the world. Likewise the term Americas is used in some areas to represent both North and South America but it is widely agreed that there are seven continents.
